Panel Room: CBD Advertising: What Claims to Avoid While Promoting Your Products
The margins for lawful CBD advertising are extremely narrow. CBD products can’t make health claims, yet they’re made predominantly for health reasons. It’s like chocolate milk not being
able to make taste claims. Ideally, CBD companies should only be worried about making quality
products rather than tightroping across an advertising minefield of technicalities. But the status
quo of the CBD industry is far from ideal. Nevertheless, CBD businesses can adapt and learn to
navigate it successfully.

Extraction is an essential part of the process from plant to shelves.  Innovation in formulations has emphasized the extraction of the compounds from the plant to meet the ingredients list.  While minimizing the capital and operating costs, meeting the requirements has been a challenge for companies.  At line and inline testing equipment is has not moved at the same rate as extraction equipment.  What are the challenges to overcome?  Where are the choke points in the process that would save time and money?  What is being worked on currently?  How could you update current products to take advantage of today?

Special Workshop: A Science and Technology Approach to Packaging for Cannabis and Hemp Products
Presented by Dr. Jerry King
Historically, key concerns in the cannabis and hemp industries, with regard to packaging, have centered around advertising, child resistant-devices, sustainability, and labeling.  This presentation-demonstration focuses on the serious issue of which packaging materials are appropriate with respect to their chemical interactions and engineering properties. These topics are important for several reasons:

  • Interactions do occur between cannabinoids and terpenes and a variety of packaging materials such as polymers, can coatings, glass, and other container materials.
  • Cannabis extracts and products can absorb chemicals from the packaging materials such additives raising concerns about consumer safety.
  • Conversely, the migration of terpenes and cannabinoids from cannabis products into the packaging material effects the stability and composition of the end product.   In the food industry, “flavor scalping” is a serious problem impacting; likewise, as will be illustrated for from cannabis-hemp products interacting with packaging materials.
  • Using simply theory and analysis, it can be predicted which packaging materials are compatible with cannabis extracts, tinctures, aqueous-based fluids, and topical salves.

The above issues will be demonstrated to have an impact as follows:

  • Stability of cannabinoid-terpenes infused in emulsified waters and beverages
  • Loss of cannabinoids and terpene constituents resulting in COA-labeling discrepancy
  • Incompatibility between cannabis-infused matrices and packaging materials
  • Optimal design of transdermal patches for skin application
  • Problems occurring when mixed materials are used in cannabis containers, i.e., glass-polymer, sealant-cannabis-terpene interactions, etc.

The above points will be illustrated with actual samples of packaging materials used to contain and cannabis- or hemp-derived products, and some of the problems which arise. Finally, the implications of the above issues with respect to regulatory agency approval (FDA) will be highlighted for food, medical and cosmetic products examples.
